Alexanders’s central activity is the creation of paintings that are built up from systematic application of many layers of finely-painted, regular brushstrokes in carefully calibrated colours. The canvases are large-scale and offer an immersive experience. Because of their human scale proportions, it is necessary for the viewer to decide how to look; where to enter the painting and then when and where to move the eye around within it. This kind of engagement reveals a complex, satisfying and constantly changing visual and emotional experience. The same technique is further developed in Alexanders’s Light Works where an animated digital version of the visually changing aspects of the colour paintings is presented as a small or medium- scale electronic work. Large format Light Works are suitable for indoor display in galleries, concourses, reception areas, retail spaces and public buildings, and the much smaller wall-mounted or table-top works are particularly good for domestic environments. The Light Works offer a digitally speeded-up version of the constantly changing colour and texture aspects of the larger paintings and exercise an absorbing and hypnotic quality which is unendingly engaging and satisfying.
